For years I have dreamed of traveling to Japan and this year I finally made that dream a reality. Tokyo is unlike any other place I’ve ever visited, it’s like stepping onto the set of an incredible movie. The people are so fashionable and effortlessly cool, everywhere you turn you see great photo opportunities, the food is amazing and there’s just SO much to see and do. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, but are unsure what to pack, I’ve compiled this list to help you. Of course if you are going for Japan Ski Holidays you will also need to think about the lovely, warm snow gear you will need too. My biggest tip? Don’t overpack. There are SO many cool things that you’re going to want to buy, you’re going to need the room in your luggage. If you forget to pack anything, don’t stress, you can buy it easily. If you’re planning on visiting Tokyo, these resources can also help you: Where to stay in Japan, Hotel Century Southern Tower Review, and 43 Things to do in Tokyo. What to pack for a trip to Thailand

Planning a trip to Thailand, but not sure what to pack? I was lucky enough to visit this beautiful country a few weeks ago and have put together this Quick Guide on what to pack for a trip to Thailand, to help you. If you’ve been to Thailand and have some suggestions, please share them in the comments below. Pack light My overall advice is to pack light, because you can buy most things cheaply and do laundry very easily in Thailand, so you’re better off leaving space in your luggage. Thailand can be hotter than Magic Mike, so pack clothes that are light and breathable like cotton or quick-dry material. Money  Major cities have plenty of ATMs that accept foreign cards, but just remember you get charged a fee every time you withdraw, so it’s better to plan your budget ahead and take out what you need in fewer transactions. You’ll also need to notify your bank you’re going to Thailand or they’ll think you’re a fraudster and freeze your accounts. No Pad Thai for you. Jacket  If you are visiting the mountains, it can get cold at night. You may also like to pack a rain coat or windbreaker [...]

What to pack for a trip to Indonesia

Planning a trip to Indonesia? If you read my last post about Things to do in Sumbawa, you should be feeling very inspired to head over and enjoy this beautiful country. If you’re visiting Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa or one of the other beautiful islands in Indonesia, but unsure what to take with you, check out this Quick Guide on what to pack. If you’ve been lucky enough to visit Indonesia and have some tips I may have missed, please share them in the comments below. Keep it light  The thing about Indonesia is it’s very affordable and very hot, which means you don’t have to pack everything you own ‘just in case’. Budget airlines like Jetstar usually have sale fares which don’t include checked baggage, but truth be told you can definitely survive a week in Indonesia with a backpack’s worth of clothing. Money You will need money in two different currencies when you arrive in Denpasar, US Dollars and Indonesian Rupiah. A Visa on arrival costs US$35 per person and you have to line up and buy your visa(s) before you go through passport control, make sure you have this money with you. ATMs are a dime a dozen and [...]

What to pack for a girls trip

So you’re going on a girls weekend, you don’t know what to pack and your first instinct was probably, “Pack everything I own!” Woah, slow down there amigo. Before you go out to stock up on packing boxes, take a moment to read this carefully constructed list on what to take with you, otherwise we both know you’re inevitably going to pack at least 5,000 things you do not need. Before we get started with the official ‘what to pack’ list, I offer you this sage advice: Allow enough time to pack so you can let your bag/suitcase/150 litre chest sit overnight then double-check what you’ve packed. It’s the same sort of concept as ‘don’t go to the grocery store when you’re hungry’. A 24 hour cool-down period and re-audit of your packing will help you realise you don’t need to take three pairs of boots and 64 bikinis on a 2 night trip to the Gold Coast. Swimwear If you are going somewhere warm and tropical keep your bikini packing to a minimum. Yes, it’s tempting to pack every hot bikini you own, but don’t. I operate on a maximum of three which means I have one I’m wearing that day, [...]

What to pack for a trip to Iceland

Without a doubt Iceland is one of the most naturally beautiful places I have ever visited and one of my favourite destinations ever. Not only are the people a happy, smiling bunch but the food is yummy and the landscape is breathtaking. If you haven’t thought of visiting this magical place before, do some research because it really is a ‘must-do’. I recently shared a blog post about my Icelandic roadtrip and a guide on things to do and see in Reykjavik and beyond. One of the hard parts of planning for the trip was deciding what to pack! I come from Brisbane, where our winter temperatures hover just above the Icelandic summer temperatures. Ruh-roh. Unfortunately airlines don’t take too kindly to you packing 50kg worth of thermal underwear, so not only do you have to appropriately for your trip to Iceland… you also have to pack smart! What you pack will depend heavily on the time of year you visit, so please keep that in mind when reading the list below. It’s also really important to take into account your own health concerns, as the temperatures can get very low. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland and have no [...]

What to pack for a trip to China

Planning a trip to China but not sure what you need to pack? I’ve put together this guide to help you. Whether you’re visiting Guangzhou, Beijing, Huangshan, Shanghai or beyond, this guide will help you understand what you need to pack and help you be prepared. Medicine Bring a small bag packed full of essential medicines with you, bring things like cold and flu tablets, hay fever/allergy medicine, ibuprofen, paracetamol, tums and Imodium. I got a bit sick from the smoggy air and because I can only speak a little bit of Chinese, had a tough time explaining what I needed. That said, the lady at the corner store was really helpful when I acted out my symptoms. You should also definitely pack your prescription medicines and anything special you may require, like a ventolin inhaler for asthmatics. Tissues Pocket packs of tissues tucked into a bag will come in very helpful at public toilets. Whilst there is no shortage of T.P in China, there are some public toilets which run out of the good stuff due to the high volume of people using them. Don’t be a victim, be proactive. If you’re a germ-a-phobe, I recommend packing a bottle of hand [...]

Planning a trip to New Zealand in winter, but not sure what you need to pack? I’ve put together this guide to help you. Whether you’re visiting Queenstown, Christchurch, Auckland, Wanaka or beyond, this guide will help you understand what you need to pack and help you be prepared. We recently spent 10 days exploring New Zealand’s gorgeous South Island and these packing tips are based on our experiences. Clothes Snow gear  If you plan to go hiking, snowboarding or skiing, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, snow-shooing or any other kind of outdoor activities, you’re definitely going to need some snow gear. I took the Kathmandu Parsenn 2 Layer Waterproof 3 in 1 jacket and Verso XT Hiking Pants. Matt took the Kathmandu Teton 2 Layer Waterproof 3 in 1 jacket and Verso hiking pants like mine. We both wore these for all of our snow and adventure activities and they turned out to be absolutely essential. Honestly, we would have frozen without them. It’s really important your snow gear is warm, comfortable, gives you room to move, has lots of pockets AND is quick to dry. That’s what our gear gave us and because they’re such great quality, they’re going to last [...]

Clothes The key with clothes is to pack light as you’re probably going to go shopping and want to buy a lot of wonderful things. So, don’t over-pack. Keep it light as possible, packing your go-to favourites. I always try to take as many of my clothes as possible out of the clean laundry pile, because I know I actually wear those. There are so many airlines offering discounted airfares if you travel without checked baggage. The price difference between carry-on only and checked baggage fares can be a lot and the temptation to test out your packing skills is all too real. Trust me, I know! When you’re travelling on a budget or even if you’re just budget savvy, you’re going to want to take advantage of cheaper airfares. And, really, why shouldn’t you?? Money saved on airfares equals more money to spend on food, wine and activities at your destination. Besides, if you’re just going away for a weekend or travelling somewhere warm, how much do you really need to take with you? If you’ve ever doubted your light-packing abilities and whether it’s really possible – STOP. Matt and I did our trip to New Zealand for 2 weeks with 7kg carry on. You guys, if we can do that, anything in life is possible. If you can dream it – you can DO IT! energetic thumbs up There used to be some wiggle room with carry-on baggage, until airlines started weighing what we were taking on and realising we were all hauling on 15kg backpacks. Suddenly, the game changed [...]

Planning a trip to the Philippines but not sure what you should pack? Based on my trip to Boracay, here’s a guide on what you’ll need to take with you to have a great time on your holiday to this beautiful part of the world. Clothes The key is to pack light and, as it’s going to be warm, pack clothing that is light and breathable. Think things like: Cotton shorts // singlet tops // cotton, breathable t-shirts // long-sleeve shirts to pull over your swimmers when you’re on a boat to protect you from the sun Cotton dresses // sarong // wrap skirt // long or billowy cotton skirts // denim shorts // hats Pack more than one set of swimwear, so you have a dry set to wear while your wet ones from yesterday are drying. I made sure I packed lots of basics, like white and grey t-shirts and singlet tops, but packed brightly coloured or patterned skirts and shorts to help me mix things up. I don’t really buy a lot of brand new clothes, so if you’re like me you might want to do what I do and visit your local Op-Shop or thrift store. It’s [...]

Before heading to Portland, my first visit, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I kept reading the famous slogan, “Keep Portland Weird,” and it added many layers of confusion to my pre-departure planning, especially when it came to packing. I got the sense it wasn’t a super ‘fancy’ place, but I couldn’t quite grasp what I should pack. Would it be cold? Would it be hot? Will I need warm layers or are jeans and t-shirts enough?! It was a confusing time and I started panic packing all kinds of weird things. Turned out, as usual, I didn’t need half of it! So, now I’ve been, seen and experienced, here are my tips on what you should pack for a trip to Portland, Oregon. A quick note – I visited Portland as part of a work trip for Mitsubishi Motors so if any of the photos in this post seem a bit weird, that’s why. What should I pack for my trip to Portland? For me, Portland has a distinctly outdoors feel to it – there are a lot of people wearing Kathmandu and North Face style clothing. Lots of functional outfits that add warmth and are waterproof, as [...]
